Nearby, Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill and Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster offer acute care as well. Carolinas HealthCare System supports 36 facilities including its flagship Carolinas Medical Center which serves as a Level I Trauma Center for the Carolinas and one of America’s best medical/teaching hospitals. Carolinas Medical offers heart, liver, pancreas and kidney transplant surgery, plus a 40-bed Children’s Hospital, renowned Carolinas Heart Institute, Blumenthal Cancer Center, Orthopedics Institute, and Neurological Institute featuring an Epilepsy Center, Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, Stroke Unit and one of only a handful of ALS Centers that treats Lou Gehrig Disease.
Presbyterian Hospital anchors the Presbyterian Healthcare system which includes two acute care and two specialty hospitals, a full range of surgical and outpatient services, the Center for Women’s Health, and 72-bed Hemby Children’s Hospital, Belk Heart Center, and the Charlotte region’s most comprehensive center for cancer treatment.
Located in downtown Columbia, Providence Hospital, is a 247-bed facility founded in 1938 by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Augustine to minister to the community, in both body and spirit. Decades later, the hospital has been lauded for cardiac care expertise provided through Providence Heart & Vascular Institute, which serves as a nationally recognized referral center for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
Palmetto Health Baptist in Columbia operates a 489-bed acute care hospital with approximately 2,300 full- and part-time employees, 750 physicians, and 500 volunteers. Regarded as one of the best equipped and most advanced hospitals in the Southeast, Palmetto Health Baptist has won the Consumer Choice Award for ten consecutive years. The system annually serves more than 225,000 patients from across the state and beyond with a wide range of primary and specialty health care services.
Situated in one of South Carolina’s fastest growing communities, Lexington Medical Center provides a 384-bed metropolitan medical complex that anchors a comprehensive, county-wide health care network. That network includes six community medical centers at strategic locations throughout Lexington County, the largest extended care facility in the state, an occupational health center, and affiliated physician practices.
William Jennings Bryan (WJB) Dorn VA Medical Center includes a 216-bed hospital encompassing acute medical, surgical, psychiatric, and long-term care. The medical center provides primary, secondary, and some tertiary care for over 56,000 patients annually. Satellite outpatient clinics are located in Anderson, Greenville, Florence, Orangeburg, Sumter and Rock Hill, SC. The hospital also serves as Clinic of Jurisdiction for the state of South Carolina, and maintains affiliations with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, located on the hospital grounds, Moncrief Army Community Hospital at Fort Jackson, and Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, SC.
Emergency Services
While crime rates remain low in Chester County, we maintain five police patrol units on duty at all times, providing a five- to 15-minute response time. Rescue Chester emergency medical service is licensed as an Advanced Life Support team with 40 employees trained for high-risk situations. We also staff nearly 50 paid firefighters and volunteers to serve the area.
