The only problem with having an athletic hall of fame at Lewisville High School is deciding which deserving alumnae to put in first.

In April, the school will induct its first class into the Lewisville High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Eligible for entry is any former player, coach or team. There are qualifications that have to be met for anyone to be considered for entry. A player must be at least 10 years removed from their graduation and will be judged on the impact they had on their teams as a whole and what they accomplished individually as a Lion and beyond. Teams must have at least played for a state title and must have done so at least 15 years ago. The criteria for coaches is somewhat less defined and there is no specific timeline for when their accomplishments must have taken place.

Lewisville football coach Will Mitchell said a 10-member selection committee is being put together that will likely include coaches, school administrators and community members. He said many such committees have an odd number to insure no tied votes, but he thinks an even number is actually better, since any person selected will be voted in by at least a two-vote margin.

"This will be an annual event to recognize Lewisville's excellence," Mitchell said.

Lewisville has won titles in nearly every sport, has been home to some of the most successful and respected coaches in the state and has churned out dozens of college and professional athletes. Given that, it will be impossible to get every deserving person in the first time around, Mitchell said.

"We can't nominate them all in the first year," Mitchell said. "We appreciate the community's support and patience as we put this together."

Mitchell said he figures the initial class will be larger than the ones to come. He hopes to have a banquet of some kind each year to honor inductees and would like to have their names and pictures placed somewhere for posterity sake, like the school's gym. He said the idea has been in the works for a while and that he has been studying the halls of fame at other schools as a guide to work by.
