Chester State Park pic among state winners

June 16, 2015

Three South Carolinians submitted winning photos for the spring season of the South Carolina State Park Service’s “Making Memories” photo contest, and will automatically compete with winners from the summer, fall and winter seasons for the grand prize. Among the winning photos was one snapped at Chester State Park.

The “making memories” photo contest invited people to visit state parks throughout the seasons in the past year, to snap photos of their memories and submit them for a chance to win prizes.

Brian Fox of Blythewood won first place in the wildlife category for his photo of a spotted sandpiper at Chester State Park. Fox said he visits the park often.

“I enjoy walking the trail at Chester State Park," Fox said. "It is good exercise and usually presents good photo opportunities. I was surprised to see a spotted sandpiper at the spillway this past April. At the time, I didn’t know what type of bird it was. Photography has proved to be useful in increasing my knowledge of nature.”

Claiming first place in the people category for the spring season was Eric Rodgers of Liberty for a photo of his twins on the beach at Hunting Island State Park.

“ The photograph was taken when my family was at Hunting Island for a week long camping trip in March,” he said. “My family loves camping and we've been to several other South Carolina coastal state parks but this was our first trip to Hunting Island. Pictured are my five year old boy/girl twins and this was taken on the morning of our first full day in the park."

David C. Spaulding of Travelers Rest captured first place in the Landscape category for his photo of Table Rock Mountain framed by blooming dogwood.

“It was a perfect day in the second week of April and I had gone up to Table Rock State Park looking for spring pictures,” Spaulding said. “I had come in the East Gate and pulled into the Table Rock Lodge because the dogwoods seemed to be in full bloom and I saw some potential great photos!” He added, “Nature provided the scenery. I was just lucky enough to capture it correctly!”

Each winner received a prize package valued at $200, including a gift certificate from Mast General Store, a State Park Service Park Passport Plus and an Official Guide to South Carolina State Parks.

All three also will compete with the winners from the summer, fall and winter contests for the grand prize, a package worth $1,200. The package includes a Tilley Hat and ENO Hammock with straps from Mast General Store in Columbia or Greenville, and a $1,000 State Park gift card valid toward any campsite or cabin reservation in the system.

The grand prize winner will be determined by online voting from June 15-30. Anyone with an email address can vote for one selection per day during that time period, and the photograph with the most votes will be named the winner. To vote, visit www.SouthCarolinaParks.com and look for the “Making Memories” logo.
